Why Angola?
Angola is still recovering from more than 40 years of armed conflict. Most Angolans still live in poverty. The country ranks second in the world for child mortality, with one in four children dying before the age of five. Many of the children and young people live on less than US$1 a day. They don’t have enough to eat, have no school to go to, and can’t get treatment when they are ill.
Save the Children knows the problems in Angola and responds to the challenges with several projects.
Reckitt Benckiser identified together with Save the Children a target region (Huambo province) where in particular children suffer from its poverty and lack of infrastructure: www.savethechildren.org.uk
Since 2006, Reckitt Benckiser supports the work of Save the Children in Angola. Together, we fight for better health services and against child mortality.
Why a competition?
As a successfull business Reckitt Benckiser strongly believes that the best ideas and most innovative concepts are created whenever people are striving to achieve something extraordinary, when people want to win. This playful and hands-on approach motivates people to think out of the box and to come up with something really superb and innovative. In the end everybody stands behind the most convincing idea trying hard to make it happen.
How can I participate?
Why do you want me to activate my social network?
Despite Save the Children is the worldwide leading independent organization creating lasting change in the lives of children in need, unfortunately the work they do is still not very well recognized by the German public. With ‘Do something BIG!’ we would like to support Save the Children to become more widely known in Germany and generally contribute that the needs of children in poverty and children in need have the public awareness they should have.
Can I use my Facebook or StudiVZ account?
Of course you can use all popular platforms in the internet for the project and documentation by linking your account with our homepage.
What happens if an idea is submitted twice?
What happens if someone copies my idea?
What happens if there is an overlap with another idea?
There is no such criteria like „singularity“. What counts is to convince the jury of the assessment criteria. Even better: Teams with the same or complementary idea can collaborate and enter the race together!
There will be extensive documentation of winning idea, and it will become part of a case study regarding “Corporate Social Responsibility”, that your university will also be provided with as teaching material.
Is the winning idea really going to be implemented?
Of course we are looking for an idea with the potential to be really implemented. Based on many years of experience, the experts of Save the Children know best what improves the lives of the children in Angola in a sustainable way.
Nevertheless we have to acknowledge that sometimes not every good idea that sounds good to us can be implemented immediately because it may require extensive planning and preparation, formal authorizations or appropriate circumstance on site. This is why it is so important that your ideas consider the parameters set. And, this is why ‘practicability’ made it into the list of criteria to identify the best idea.
What happens to the data of the supporters once ‘Do something BIG!’ is finished?
One intention of ‘Do something BIG!’ is to raise the awareness level of Save the Children as an organisation and children in need in general. Your supporters’ e-mail addresses will only be used to inform about ‘Do something BIG!’ and the progress made.
And, we will count the number of supporters as a strong indication for how serious you’re taking your participation and how convincing your idea is to others.
If your personal supporters become supporters of Save the Children afterwards is entirely their decision. Without formal authorization there won’t be any additional communication.
Any product promotion by Reckitt Benckiser is not intended and will not take place.
Why shall we collect additional donations and how does it work in practice?
The reason why we introduced this criteria is to underline the fact that Save the Children saves lives and really every single Euro counts to improve the life of children in need.
First of all: You can collect additional donations, but it is not a requirement for your participation.
The total amount of donations collected by your team will only be one of several criteria but will not determine the decision of the jury.
The amount of additional donations collected by you is seen as an indication for how convincing your idea is to others and how strong your supporters support your participation.
The money will be transferred directly to Save the Children, referring to your team, under:
Save the Children Deutschland e.V.
Spendenkonto 929
Verwendungszweck: Do something BIG! + name of your team
Bankleitzahl 100 205 00

The donations collected in the course of the competition „Do something BIG!“ will be used according to the statutory and charitable purposes of Save the Children Germany for the implementation of the winning idea, if the idea respects the criteria of practicability and supports the projects of Save the Children funded by Reckitt Benckiser in Angola. All participants and supporter will have access to the application of funds.
